Biography

After graduating with an honours degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, Andrew gained his PhD from the University of London with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, before joining Professor Kay Davies at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London and then the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford. Here he was part of the team, which identified mutations in the Survival Motor Neurone (SMN) gene as causative of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

He returned to London, joining the group of Professor Raj Thakker at the Clinical Sciences Centre, Hammersmith Hospital and relocated with him to Oxford firstly, as a senior postdoctoral researcher and then as a University Research Lecturer uncovering the genetic causes of disorders of calcium metabolism.

Both as the senior scientist in the Academic Endocrine Unit and in his own right, Andrew was successful in attracting peer-reviewed funding from bodies such as the MRC, EU and ARUK.

His expertise, technical knowledge and insight in the field was widely recognised and he was been regularly invited to speak at international (American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, EMBO workshops on GATA factors, Translational Research in Europe Applied Technologies for Osteoarthritis (EU Framework 7) Consortium meetings) and national conferences (British Endocrine Society, Bone Research Society).

In 2013, Andrew joined the Vision Research Group Research within the Genomic Medicine at Ulster University as a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology.

Working with Tara Moore, Andrew brings his expertise in identifying the underlying genetic causes of human disease to the development of gene editing and gene silencing technologies for inherited eye diseases. His work has been disseminated worldwide in invited guest lectures and workshops at internationally eye conferences (ARVO and ISER), co-authored peer reviewed publications in high impact peer reviewed journals and contributions to a number of book chapters. Andrew has a consistent record of publication in high quality, peer-reviewed journals (Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Human Molecular Genetics, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Controlled Release, Molecular Therapy).

Andrew collaborates widely with colleagues in both Academia (University College London; Queen’s University Belfast; Trinity College, Dublin; University of Dundee, Aarhus University, Denmark; Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain; University of Cologne, Germany) and industry (Avellino Labs, USA, Sisaf Ltd UK, Almac Discovery)
