David Comiskey is a Senior Lecturer within the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment. He holds a first class honours degree in Architectural Technology and Management from Ulster University and an MSc (Distinction) in BIM and Integrated Design from the University of Salford, receiving the Autodesk Award for Best Dissertation. David is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Chartered Architectural Technologist (MCIAT), admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (FCIAT) in 2021, and a Chartered Construction Manager, admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB) in 2020. David is also a Certified European Passive House Consultant (CEPH). His achievements including being awarded the Distinguished Teaching Fellowship from Ulster University on two occasions as well as twice receiving recognition at the Northern Ireland innovation in eLearning awards. He has been recognised at both national and international level, awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy in 2017 and was shortlisted as a finalist in both the 2018 and 2020 International Chartered Architectural Technologist of the Year Awards. Other notable achievements include David’s invitation to sit on the review panel for the current QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Architectural Technology. David is a current external examiner at Technological University Dublin as well as previously being external examiner at Waterford Institute of Technology.
David has broad research interests in the areas of technology enhanced learning, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the digital transformation of the built environment sector, and he is currently reading for a PhD in the latter. His current research relating to BIM and digital technology integration has provided an opportunity to visit numerous cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and Dubai and visit prestigious research institutions such as the BIM TOPiCS Lab at the University of British Columbia. David has presented his research internationally at a range of conferences and sat on numerous conference and scientific committees. He has secured funding grants for his research and delivered consultancy training to industry in addition to acting as a reviewer for international journals. As a supervisor, David has mentored students to publish their research on the digital transformation of the built environment at peer reviewed international conferences. In addition, three of the students he has supervised have gained recognition on an international stage, recognised at the prestigious Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) AT Awards.
Outside of the University, David sits as a member on the Northern Ireland BIM Region and Digital Transformation Group and has been a member of the Northern Ireland CIAT Committee since 2009, holding the role of Northern Ireland CPD Officer for over 5 years. He currently sits on the national Special Issues Taskforce for CIAT and is a professional interview assessor as well as an accreditation review panel member.
