Frédéric Huska is a lecturer on the BA (hons) Photography with Video and MA Photography. Originally from France, he studied at the Royal College of Art, before completing a PhD with Practice at Ulster University in 2015. His current art work explores the multi-layered connections between the self, history and the architecture of the city, with photography, writing and film. It aims to re-map urban spaces intuitively and libidinally, hence mediating notions of time and duration within the construction and spectatorship of photographic representations. Issues that are related to historiography, such as the process of abstraction and exteriority, are addressed and challenged through a longing – and ultimately failure – to reach out to unfathomable histories. In its conception, his work mirrors the paradoxical nature of melancholia in which the object-loss is primordial and yet unknown, and it dwells on the contradictory movements emerging through the inner violence embedded in the architectural fabric of the city.
His previous work and research investigated the relationship between the city and photography in relation to the phenomenon of déjà vu, through a critical approach involving the concepts of desire and becoming, as elaborated in postmodern philosophy. His thesis, entitled The Predicament of Undecidability: moments of déjà vu in space, time and consciousness - practice of photographing and writing in Los Angeles, draws upon three main ideas in order to photographically engage with the city: the concept of cultural aberrations, the notion of the cinematic, and the idea of architectural excess. From there, it takes on a reflexive and reflective structure, expanding on the complexity of the photographs through pieces of theoretical and creative writing.
Other research interests involve: interrogating the nature of the photographic image and its relation to time and duration by fostering sites of encounter with other mediums – especially drawing – and at times practices from other artists; and exploring strategies to incorporate reflective writing into visual art work, initiating conceptual or narrative displacements in order to open new possibilities for making and experiencing art.
