Personal profile

Dr Hyojung Sun is a research associate in the creative industries department where she works as part of Policy and Evidence Centre (PEC) programme.

She holds a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies (STS) from the University of Edinburgh. Her thesis looked at why the predicted digital revolution in the recording industry did not happen. This was turned into a book titled “Digital Revolution Tamed: The Case of the Recording Industry” published by Palgrave MacMillan.

As a multidisciplinary researcher, her academic expertise crosses law, social science, cultural studies and popular music studies. Her main academic interests involve digital and disruptive technology, the music industry, and creative industries more widely.

Most of her work so far has focused on issues relevant to digital music disruption. This includes the recently published research project Music 2025 – the Data Dilemma. Commissioned by the UK IPO, this project  has made a significant contribution to the evidence base,  gaining industry-wide support and is acting as a catalyst in bringing industry, academia and Government together to tackle the fundamental data issues affecting digital content industries. In her PEC role, Dr Sun will expand her knowledge and utilise her expertise into supporting the development of innovation mapping and creative industries business models in Northern Ireland.

Dr Sun has a rich background crossing industry and academia. She worked in the IT industry where she observed early Internet policy making process by attending international conferences held by ICANN. Based on this experience, she went back to school to further study IT policy and worked as a legislative researcher for National Assembly Research Services in Korea, helping policy makers and politicians make sound decisions in the field of media, culture and tele-communications.
