Personal profile


Lecturer in Engineering Science at Ulster University. Previously Head of Group at Plataforma Solar de Almería of CIEMAT (Spain). Her research focuses on low-cost technologies for water purification, photochemical and advanced oxidation processes for the removal of microbiological pathogens and hazardous chemical contaminants from water, and decentralized technologies for drinking water in developing communities.

Published 154 peer-reviewed papers (H= 52, total citations > 8,700). Participated in 19 EU-funded research projects. Co-investigator in the GCRF-UKRI SAFEWATER and SAFEWATER-TRANSLATE, aimed at investigating low-cost and sustainable technologies to provide and monitor safe drinking water in rural communities in collaboration with Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mexico and Nepal. Principal investigator on two H2020 projects, REWATERGY and PANIWATER (EU-India collaboration), and a Royal Society International Collaboration Award with the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil).

Fellow of the Institute of Physics-UK and Ireland, Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy-UK. Member of the Climate Change and Environmental Sciences Committee of the Royal Irish Academy and the International Water Association. Editor for Europe of the Journal of Photochemistry & Photobiology, A: Chemistry and Process Safety and Environmental Protection, both from Elsevier. Editor in Frontiers in Environmental Science and Frontiers Chemistry. Finalist in the WISE (gender balance in science, technology and engineering) awards 2019 to her contribution in solar technology research.
