This paper investigates the importance of civic events as a stimulus for ‘civic pride’. It explores the challenges associated with the measurement of civic pride following major events and examines the outcomes of the European Music Awards (EMAs) hosted by Belfast City Council in 2011. The event literature in relation to civic pride and its measurement is reviewed. Research carried out in two UK cities, Liverpool and Edinburgh that have previously hosted the EMAs is considered in determining their measuring of event impacts. Data collected by the Belfast Tourism Monitor on behalf of Belfast City Council is analysed to ascertain the event impacts of the EMAs. Findings show a leaning towards the collection and evaluation of economic data however media reports illustrate success and strong evidence of community support for the event. Belfast’s event strategy, to be globally competitive, should be cognisant of the importance of civic pride.
