Abstract

Coir' a' Ghrunnda 360 is an outcome from the Pan 360 project.Exploring and critiquing methods of video based landscape narrative construction. An ongoing series of short, landscape based, video works made by attaching a modified camera to a leash and whirling it through the space above and around the body. This simple activity of production dissolves conventional landscape scenes or views into sequences of dramatic visual activity where the landscape image is literally put into a spin. The raw video-scapes combine both the performative activity with the beautiful concordant / discordant footage of the environment.Through this, it aims to merge the figure and the landscape within a spatial narrative that is not constructed on the organizing principle of the static frame and single viewpoint but on the physicality of actions in the landscape embedded with functional technology. The significance of location enters the project as each place contributes specific visual data creating specific narratives faithful to location and method. This outcome was made in Scotland in the Coire a' Ghrunnda location in the Cullin Mountains, Skye.Coir' a' Ghrunnda 360 has been shown at several national and international venues and was selected for the Figuring Landscape project and publication and the Difference Screen internationa touring programme of video art: Figuring Landscapes is a remarkable collection of moving image works that has grown from the background of the political and cultural history that links the UK and Australia. Presented internationally as a series of screening programmes, the works in Figuring Landscapes address questions of ecological survival, post-industrialism, gender, the touristic gaze, and uniquely in Australia, the social, political and cultural status of Indigenous people in a post-colonial society.Figuring Landscapes premiered at ArtSway in the New Forest from 25 - 30 November 2008, the tour launched at Tate Modern, London, 6 - 8 February 2009.The tour continues throughout the UK, Ireland and Australia during 2009 - 2010:United KingdomDundee Contemporary Arts 23 - 27 February, 2009;FACT, Liverpool 23 - 25 Feb & 2 - 4 March, 2009;Vivid, Birmingham 25 - 28 February, 2009;Showroom, Sheffield 30 March - 2 April, 2009; Glimmer, The 7th Hull International Short Film 21 - 26 April, 2009;Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff 3, 10, 17, 24, 27 May, 2009;Site Festival, Stroud Valley Artspace 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 June, 2009; Cinecity - Brighton Film Festival 22, 28 & 29 November, 2009.IrelandMermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Co.
