Abstract
Commemoration, loss and desire have found expression through memorial sites, and less tangibly become immaterially expressed through rituals of mourning. Within the political context of commemoration in Northern Ireland, this body of research attempted to trace the smaller gestures and overlooked material and immaterial expressions of loss and longing. A research paper on Belfast cemeteries was presented at the 10th world congress of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas (ISSEI 2006) convened at the University of Malta, an inter-disciplinary enquiry concerning Europe, Europeans and Europeanity across time. The research paper “(Dis)emplacing Ritual” was subsequently published in Volume 1: Part 1: History, Geography and Science as: Rohr, Doris (2010) Locations of Desire: Emplaced Rituals of Subjective Commemoration and Mourning. In: Frendo, H (ed), The European Mind Narrative and identity, Malta University Press: pp. 38-44. ISBN 978-99909-45-55-3. A revised version of this paper was presented at Art Historian’s Conference (2007) Belfast, as conference contribution “Communications or communion? Commemorating the Dead”. A previous version of this paper was presented at the Afterlife of Memory CATH/ Leeds July 2006. A series of photo-based research into memorabilia and monuments accompanied the research into material culture . The photo-intaglio print Re-vision addresses commemoration as an act, which transcends place specific and politically specific contexts, with an emphasis on universal symbolic content (wings/ death/ after life/ heroicism). The presentation of the heroic monument becomes interrogated through psychoanalytic methods, questioning the position of subject, and the role of memory and desire in the process of mourning and remembrance. The print Re-vision formed part of to the exhibition Eros/Thanatos, initiated by Engramme, Quebec, Canada, in exchange with Belfast Printworkshop, Northern Ireland.
