This paper presents an object-oriented approach to error handling and the use of confirmation strategies in spoken dialogue systems. The paper demonstrates that the architecture provides support for a flexible confirmation strategy using mechanisms to encode the dialogue history combined with confidence measures. An earlier version of the paper was presented at an international workshop and an expanded version was published in the special issue of the journal Speech Communication. The paper featured in the journal's ' 25 hottest articles' in the period January-March 2005 and has been cited by Litman et al in the journal Computational Linguistics (September 2006).
