This paper presents the Queens Communicator system that was developed using the DARPA Galaxy architecture and enhanced with an object-oriented architecture. The paper demonstrates how a complex, mixed-initiative dialogue system involving extendible and reusable components for dialogue management can be developed efficiently using Java. The paper was presented at a workshop on applications of Java and an expanded version was accepted for publication in a special issue of the journal Science of Computer Programming. The paper has provided a basis for subsequent publications within the Artificial Intelligence research group.
