In order to optimize production rates it is necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the effect of processing parameters, such as line speed, on required end product properties. This paper describes the effect of chill roll temperature, line speed, sheet thickness and melt temperature on the morphology and mechanical properties of extruded polypropylene sheet. The hot tensile properties of the sheet are also measured in order to predict how it will perform in subsequent thermoforming operations. Optimum chill roll temperatures and line speeds for a particular sheet thickness are identified. Melt temperature was found to have little effect on sheet properties.
