Abstract

The wide spread and deployment of Internet facilities across theglobe are encouraging participation of more users in some Internetbasedapplications in which e-learning is not an exemption. Elearningis a method of acquiring knowledge and skills whichdepends on the Internet in its execution. The Internet has become thevenue for a new set of illegal activities, so e-learning environment isexposed to such threats. It is surprising that a lot of works byresearchers on e-learning have been focused on development anddeployment of e-learning systems without much attention given tothe security of these e-learning facilities. This paper discusses thegeneral overview of e-learning security threats. Some critical issuesaffecting e-learning security in the virtual environment vis-a-visethics, organisational management and design and implementationissues are examined and reported. Based on the review and findingson the security issues discussed, suggestions and recommendationsare made on how to strengthen existing security technologies andpolicies. We recommended that the inclusion of our suggestions inthe implementation of new organisational policies and managementstrategies will enhance the security of the e-learning systems. Therecould be considerable improvement in the technological approachesto mitigate the security challenges, if the findings andrecommendations presented in this paper are incorporated into thedesign and implementation of security component of e-learningsystems.
