Abstract

Ralf Sander explores the disappearance of the object in contemporary sculpture. Often the Emperor’s New Cloth is used as metaphor to describe contemporary art. In Bloomington Sander made literarily an invisible artwork. The object is completely absent. There is only a description. He tested impact and believability of information in public realm within this artistic strategy. In this case a site specific installation describes the work. It visualizes trough the viewer`s imagination. Ralf Sander developed an artistic strategy of re-appropriating conventional ways of using or occupying public spaces for unexpected purposes, which may denaturalize routinized patterns of everyday life. By twisting common assumptions or repeated habits of the everyday, their works attempt to disturb how things are supposed to be and how we are expected to live and communicate. In doing so, these practices may bring attention to imaginative and contingent qualities of everyday life.
