Abstract
This chapter examines loyal associationalism in Belfast before and after the 1798 Rebellion and the Act of Union. Focussing on the Belfast Nelson Club and the Belfast Yeomanry it argues that these societies through their dinners and commemorative parades helped shape Belfast's civic identity in the early nineteenth century but control of that identity was contested with the town's radicals.
