Abstract

Next generation computer-based environments are ever increasingly pervasive andubiquitous. Such interconnected device-based environments necessitate little or no humaninvolvement in the management loop. Self-* properties, or “selfware,” refers to current andemerging behaviors exhibited by systems that are considered to be “autonomic” or inspired byanother view of self-management. We describe some emerging properties, which range fromself-adjusting to self-destruction. We describe the architecture required to create self-wareand discuss the relationship between autonomicity and autonomy, and document some additional novel autonomic constructs inspired from biology for the next generation self-managingenvironments.
