The Health and Social Care Reform Act (2009) made PPI a legal requirement in Northern Ireland. To develop the knowledge base on the status of PPI in NI this research was commissioned by the Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Patient Client Council (PCC) and was conducted across Northern Ireland’s five Health and Social Care Trusts. Aim: To examine the current state of Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) from the perspective of service users, carers, patients and Health and Social Care (HSC) staff. Methodology: An online survey was conducted with HSC staff (n=138) and focus groups (n=10) were carried out with service users, carers and HSC staff (n=89).Results: The study supports the development of new and effective ways ofimproving awareness of, ensuring accountability for, implementing, monitoring andevaluating PPI in NI. The ten recommendations emerging from the findings identify the organisation(s) responsible for taking each forward and have been approved by the respective Boards of the PHA and PCC. A regional action plan is being developed to implement the recommendations across HSC.Following a short presentation on the research, this workshop will ask participants to reflect on the findings and recommendations and identify: 1. HSC Staff - What actions will you take to change your PPI practice?2. Service Users/Carers - What would encourage you/others to participate in PPI?3. All - What are the priority areas for further research in PPI?
