Abstract

This chapter introduces the fundamentals of photocatalytic disinfection with emphasis on recent developments in nanostructured materials and their applications. It starts with a detailed analysis of the mechanisms that explain the inactivation of microorganisms by heterogeneous photocatalysis, and then discusses the effects of key parameters in the efficiency of the photocatalytic disinfection performance in this complex system, including the chemical parameters, the nature of the microorganism, and the physical aspects related with the irradiation of the photocatalyst. A discussion of recent research trends on new nanomaterials and heterostructures for photocatalytic disinfection is included to demonstrate the key concepts and parameters for selecting a good disinfecting material.
