This paper demonstrates how an object-oriented approach to spoken dialogue systems design provides advantages in terms of the maintainability, extension, and reuse of dialogue management components. The system is compared with a functionally equivalent VoiceXML system and a number of scenarios are applied to measure reuse and maintainability. The paper presents a novel approach to the estimation of the effort required to modify and extend a dialogue system that can be applied generally to the design of dialogue systems. The journal ACM TSLP has high standards for acceptance and a high emphasis on the wide accessibility of papers.
