Service-oriented computing has become the central underpinning technology for Grid computing and its application such as e-Science. In this paper we propose a utility computing model that allows environment aware dynamic service discovery, orchestration and deployment. The model enhances previous Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in that it is based on the new conception of environment aware agile service utilities. We introduce the concept and discuss its research issues upon which a novel approach is conceived. The approach has two compelling features: First it separates services from their hosting environments, and formally models the environments as first class service utilities that allow flexible and dynamic service provision. Second, it exploits semantic metadata management and agent-based decision-making support for high-level interoperability, environment aware service discovery and automatic composition. We propose and elaborate the requirements, functions, interplay and enabling technologies for the components of the approach’s architecture. A simple application scenario is presented to demonstrate its use.
