Abstract
A consideration of early broadcasting in Ireland, north and south, the article argues that both the BBC in Belfast and Radio Éireann in Dublin were established with a conservative and essentialist cultural agenda. However, broadcasting itself was not always amenable to such a limited cultural horizon and the early years are marked with moments of interesting controversy and contradiction.
