‘The Tree of Knowledge’ Our Lady & Saint Patrick’s College, Knock Belfast, 2014.The ‘Tree of Knowledge’ artwork is fabricated in 304 Grade Stainless Steel, which is both robust and durable. The artwork is situated in front of the main entrance to the College Building. The sculpture/artwork is four meters tall and was created in stainless steel sheet at 10mm gauge. A range of imagery and text was cut form the sheet metal and the resulting artwork is in the form of a tree and book combined. The overall concept for the artwork refers to the growth of knowledge and the branches of learning that have evolved through the history of human enquiry. In general the visual information relates to the contemporary learning environment and references to the variety of forms of languages through which we learn and communicate knowledge today. The branches of the tree and the book are in-filled with imagery made up from text or letters, mathematical equations, music, scientific diagrams and equipment etc. All imagery and text was derived through a series of school workshops with a range of pupils and also with teachers input. My approach to the workshop process was to ask “If we only had one page on which to write, what would we then consider as the key information that best represents humanities quest for knowledge and our most important discoveries? In particular I have inserted a section of poetry by Seamus Heaney, a section from the Article of International Human Rights, A brief description of DNA and imagery relating to science, music, etc. Unlike the more random or natural tree imagery, the text and imagery within the book have been laid out as within a book, aligned to the page format. I also included the school Moto Gratias Agamus – (“Let us give thanks”.), and a short text by the headmaster of the school.
