The work of Rene Girard has given us a critical lens through which to understand the central importance of sacred violence in Northern Ireland. Likewise Northern Ireland acts as a laboratory through which the hypothesis of model-rival and model-obstacle relationships can be viewed. This article explores the connectipons concluding that Girard provides an important insight into the pathology of conflict in ethnically conte4sted societies.
