Abstract

When I saw The Hamilton Complex, at Birmingham Rep as part of the programme for the ASSITEJ Artistic Gathering, On the Edge, in July 2016, it was received rapturously by many and angrily by some. Directed by Lies Pauwels, the show was a co-production between Pauwels’s company Sontag and Belgium’s leading children’s theatre company HETPALEIS. Prior to the staging in Birmingham, it had toured across Europe and been presented as part of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), at the Unicorn Theatre, London’s dedicated venue for young audiences. In this chapter, I explore my own responses to this production as a way of opening up a debate about ethics and gender representation in Theatre for Young Audiences, particularly those that include young people as performers.
