Abstract

India is heading toward water and energy scarcity. There is increasing number of instances where water distribution is affected adversely due to unavailability of electricity, and power generation companies have to reduce their generation during summers as they have to shut down boilers due to unavailability of water. Water and energy shortage together affects public welfare and environment adversely. The paper brings out nexus between energy in water, using case study of Delhi. This understanding of nexus portrays transition state of hydrologic and energy footprint in urban centres. About 72% of energy use in water supply system is direct (in the form of electricity and diesel) and electricity alone has significant share (about 67%) of the total energy use. Water treatment for public supply has maximum share (about 38%); followed by energy use at household (32%).
